For individuals living with Alzheimer’s disease, dementia, cancer, chronic illness, or other serious health conditions, comfort and quality of life can become an important part of ongoing care.
I offer gentle, comfort-focused palliative massage and supportive bodywork in my office for individuals who are able to comfortably attend an appointment and receive light therapeutic touch.
Depending upon the individual’s needs, comfort level, and tolerance that day, a session may include:
Gentle craniosacral therapy
Energy work
Gentle myofascial release
Very light lymphatic techniques
Light, soothing massage
Quiet therapeutic touch and relaxation
Aromatherapy, when appropriate and tolerated
Relaxing music from different genres to help create a familiar and comfortable atmosphere
Sessions are intentionally slow, quiet, and uncomplicated. Pressure and techniques are adjusted according to the individual, with the emphasis placed on relaxation, reassurance, comfort, and dignity.
For individuals with Alzheimer’s disease, dementia, or significant cognitive impairment, a family member, caregiver, or responsible support person needs to remain present during the appointment.
Choosing the Most Comfortable Setting
Palliative care needs can vary greatly from person to person. For some individuals with advanced dementia, Alzheimer’s disease, or serious illness, changes in environment may cause confusion, anxiety, restlessness, or agitation.
If someone becomes easily agitated, has difficulty safely transferring onto the massage table, or is no longer comfortable tolerating an office visit, an in-office session may simply not be the best setting for their needs.
Also it is not recommended for your loved one to be in a office setting if they actively have a infection, cold or fever.
The goal is always to provide the greatest sense of comfort, familiarity, dignity, and ease for the individual.
For those who have progressed into more advanced or active end-of-life care, other supportive end-of-life services may be more appropriate than an office appointment.
The purpose of palliative bodywork is simple: gentle touch, a peaceful environment, and compassionate comfort during a time when those small things can mean a great deal.
With care and support,
