Not every client is comfortable lying face down during a massage session, and sometimes the body simply needs a different level of support. Side-lying positioning is a gentle and effective option that allows clients to receive massage therapy while lying comfortably on their side with the support of pillows and bolsters.
Side-lying massage can be especially helpful for clients recovering from surgery, including heart surgery, breast implant or explant procedures, post-operative recovery, or anyone wearing compression garments or binders. It is also commonly used during prenatal massage and for clients who experience discomfort, pain, pressure, breathing difficulty, or anxiety when lying on their stomach or back.
Using a side-lying position allows the body to relax in a more supported and natural way. Even during longer 90-minute or two-hour sessions, many techniques can still be performed comfortably and effectively. This may include work on the back, hips, shoulders, neck, legs, feet and side body, as well as gentle stretching and mobility work. Clients are carefully supported with pillows and bolsters to help reduce strain and improve comfort throughout the session.
If you’re unsure what position is best for you, we’ll figure that out together during your session so you feel supported every step of the way.
I take the time to adjust everything so you feel comfortable from the moment you get on the table. Side-lying work isn’t a limitation yet it is simply another way for me to meet you where your body is that day. Whether you’re healing, navigating discomfort, or just feel more at ease on your side, I can still provide a thorough, connected session that includes the areas you need most. My goal is always to make sure you feel safe, supported, and cared for throughout your time on the table.
With care and support,
Suzan Walker LMT
