When You See Medusa in My Window

You may notice a small image of Medusa displayed in the window of my office. I want you to understand why she is there and what her presence means within this space.

Today, many survivors have reclaimed Medusa as a symbol of strength, protection, resilience, justified anger, and survival after sexual violence. Her image has become especially meaningful to some survivors of rape, sexual assault, abuse, exploitation, and human trafficking.

There are several ancient versions of Medusa’s story. In one of the most recognized retellings, Medusa was violated by Poseidon in the temple of Athena. Rather than being protected or shown compassion, Medusa carried the consequences of an act committed against her. Her story has therefore come to represent the injustice of victim-blaming and the ways survivors are often punished, silenced, disbelieved, or treated as though they are responsible for the harm someone else caused.

Medusa’s image was also used in the ancient world as a protective symbol intended to ward off danger and evil. Her face appeared on shields, buildings, armor, and sacred objects. Over time, survivors and advocates have reclaimed her but not simply as the monster she was portrayed to be, but as a figure of endurance, boundaries, protection, and power.

For some, Medusa represents the moment when a survivor stops carrying shame that never belonged to them. She represents the courage to face what happened, the strength to establish boundaries, and the determination to stand against those who harm, exploit, intimidate, or violate others.

This Medusa-themed poster represents a safe and supportive space for survivors of sexual violence and abuse. It emphasizes trauma-informed and inclusive care, ensuring dignity, respect, and boundary recognition for all individuals.

When you see Medusa displayed in my window, please understand what she means here:

This is a survivor-supportive space.

This is a trauma-informed space.

This is a space where victims of sexual violence, abuse, exploitation, and human trafficking will be treated with dignity and compassion.

This is a space where people from different backgrounds, identities, cultures, and life experiences are welcome.

Displaying this symbol does not mean that I am claiming to be a crisis center, shelter, law-enforcement agency, medical provider, or licensed mental-health counselor. It means that I will listen without judgment, respect your boundaries, help you feel physically and emotionally safer during your appointment, and assist you in locating appropriate professional or emergency resources when needed.

Medusa is not displayed here as a threat. She is displayed as a guardian as a reminder that survivors deserve protection, that boundaries matter, and that the responsibility for violence always belongs to the person who committed it.

You may also see other symbols in my office representing inclusion, missing and murdered Indigenous women, human-trafficking awareness, and support for marginalized communities. These symbols are displayed intentionally. They let people know that hatred, harassment, victim-blaming, discrimination, exploitation, and abusive behavior are not welcome here.

If the presence of these symbols conflicts with your beliefs, I may not be the appropriate massage therapist for you. My commitment to survivor dignity, personal autonomy, inclusion, and trauma-informed care is not negotiable.

When Medusa watches over this doorway, her message is simple:

You are not responsible for what someone else did to you.

You deserve to be believed.You deserve boundaries.

You deserve safety.

You deserve to reclaim your strength.
