The Holiday Season: Finding Joy, Respecting Differences, and Creating a Welcoming Space

Three generations of women sharing joy and warmth over hot drinks during the holiday season. yet not everyone looks forward to the holiday season. The festive seasons can be traumatic, painful and create grief during this time of year.

The holiday season is approaching, bringing beautiful decorations, festive music, seasonal traditions, and celebrations. For many people, this is a wonderful time of year filled with joy, laughter, cherished memories, and opportunities to reconnect with loved ones.

But for others, the holiday season isn't quite so joyful.

Not everyone looks forward to the holidays, and not everyone associates this time of year with happiness. Some individuals have experienced personal loss, grief, trauma, family estrangement, or difficult life experiences surrounding the holidays. What brings one person joy may bring another painful memories, sadness, anxiety, or even anger.

Sometimes, something as simple as hearing a familiar Christmas song, seeing holiday decorations, or being surrounded by festive celebrations can stir up emotions someone would rather not revisit.

And sometimes, people simply don't enjoy the holidays or the festivities surrounding them. They would prefer to skip the season altogether.

I understand and respect that everyone experiences the holidays differently.

A Little Seasonal Joy Throughout the Year

If you've visited my massage therapy practice, you've probably noticed that I love decorating for the changing seasons.

Throughout the year, I create different seasonal themes to make my office feel warm, peaceful, inviting, and aesthetically pleasing.

During springtime, you'll find flowers, soft pastels, and refreshing colors celebrating the arrival of spring. Summertime brings a relaxing beach-inspired atmosphere. As autumn approaches, I transition into beautiful fall colors, followed by Halloween decorations and then Thanksgiving, or as I affectionately call it, Friendsgiving.

When winter arrives, you'll find cheerful snowmen, winter-inspired decorations, and beautiful shades of red and white. And yes, I also enjoy decorating for Christmas and Yule.

For me, decorating isn't about pushing a particular holiday, tradition, or religious belief onto anyone. It's simply something I enjoy doing, and it's one of the ways I create an environment that feels welcoming and comfortable.

After all, this is also the environment where I spend much of my time working, and I believe it's important to create a space where I can thrive while sharing a little seasonal joy with my clients.

My massage and reception rooms are warmly adorned to reflect the fall season, featuring cozy lighting, autumn-themed decorations, and a calming atmosphere ideal for relaxation.

Creating a Peaceful and Relaxing Atmosphere

Although my office changes with the seasons, my intention remains the same: to provide a peaceful, comfortable environment where clients can relax and enjoy their massage therapy sessions.

My decorations are thoughtfully arranged to create a calming atmosphere rather than an overwhelming display of lights, sounds, and festivities.

Music is another part of that experience.

Throughout the year, I typically play soft, relaxing acoustic music. Depending on the season, the music may change slightly to complement the atmosphere. I also have clients who enjoy different styles of music, including blues, piano, guitar, or other relaxing instrumental selections.

I'm always happy to accommodate reasonable music preferences. If you prefer something different, I can change the music, lower the volume, or turn it off altogether.

I also occasionally offer seasonal treats and candy for clients who wish to enjoy them. Right now, with my autumn and Friendsgiving theme, you'll find treats such as Werther's Originals, pumpkin spice candies, and other seasonal favorites.

When I use aromatherapy or seasonal scents, I keep them light, using carefully selected natural products with consideration for fragrance sensitivities. My goal is never to overwhelm the senses.

It's the little touches that I enjoy sharing with those who visit my business.

Respecting Individual Experiences and Personal Boundaries

I recognize that not everyone enjoys seasonal decorations, Halloween themes, Christmas trees, Yule trees, holiday music, or the festivities surrounding certain times of the year.

Some individuals may have personal, cultural, or religious reasons for avoiding particular celebrations. Others may associate the holidays with experiences they would rather not revisit.

I respect those differences.

At the same time, I believe that respect and consideration should go both ways.

While I can make adjustments to the music and certain aspects of the atmosphere, I cannot change or remove my seasonal decorations to accommodate every individual preference.

My office is a reflection of the peaceful, welcoming environment I've worked to create over the years. Seasonal decorating is part of that environment, and something that brings me personal enjoyment as well.

I cannot realistically meet every person's individual preferences, and I don't believe any practitioner can.

That doesn't mean someone's feelings or experiences are unimportant. It simply means that we all have different needs, expectations, and comfort levels when it comes to the spaces we choose to visit.

Choosing an Environment That Feels Right for You

If you find holiday decorations, seasonal music, or festive environments uncomfortable, I encourage you to consider whether my office atmosphere is the right fit for you during that particular season.

You may prefer scheduling your appointment after the holiday decorations have been put away, or choosing a massage therapy practice with a more neutral, clinical, or minimalist atmosphere.

And that's perfectly okay.

Massage therapy is a personal experience, and choosing an environment where you feel comfortable is important.

I want my clients to enjoy their time here, but I also want to be transparent about what to expect when visiting my office.

If you have a music preference, please feel free to let me know. I'm happy to make reasonable adjustments wherever possible.

However, my seasonal decorations will remain part of the atmosphere throughout their respective seasons.

A Little Joy, A Little Understanding, and Mutual Respect

The holidays mean something different to everyone.

For some, they represent happiness, family, traditions, and beautiful memories. For others, they can be a difficult reminder of loss, estrangement, or painful experiences.

Neither experience should be dismissed.

I believe we can acknowledge those differences, respect one another's boundaries, and still allow others to enjoy the traditions and celebrations that bring them happiness.

My intention has never been to make everyone celebrate a particular holiday. It's simply to create a peaceful, relaxing, and welcoming environment with a little seasonal personality.

You don't have to celebrate the season to be welcome in my practice. But I do ask that you respect the seasonal atmosphere I've chosen to create, just as I respect your personal feelings and experiences.

Sometimes, a little kindness, understanding, and mutual respect are the most meaningful things we can share throughout the holiday season.
