Reiki, craniosacral therapy, and energy dynamics are similar yet different within themselves. Let me clarify the differences and how they may be separate yet interconnected.
What I often explain to clients is that I work with several different modalities involving the nervous system, energetic awareness, intuitive listening, and human connection. While different practitioners and communities may separate these modalities into different categories, I personally believe they are all interconnected and ultimately draw from the same source.
Reiki, craniosacral therapy, and Energy Dynamics each have their own techniques and traditions, but they all involve subtle awareness, compassion, intention, consent, and allowing the body to respond naturally without force.
Craniosacral therapy works directly with the nervous system. It only uses five grams of pressure working with the client's inner physician to guide the therapist. I often describe craniosacral therapy as being like a massage for the nervous system. Instead of forceful manipulation, you are using extremely light touch, gentle skin traction or pulling, and nervous system listening techniques to encourage a response within the body. You are essentially communicating with and “massaging” the nervous system itself so the body can unwind, regulate, and reconnect. It is working with the cranial rhythm and nervous systems to bring the body back into homeostasis.
Craniosacral therapy also works with what many call the “inner physician,” meaning the body’s own innate intelligence and ability to self-correct when given the opportunity and support to do so. In many ways, this overlaps with concepts found in energy work, including working with the subconscious mind, higher self, awareness, and deeper states of regulation and healing response.
In my personal opinion, craniosacral therapy absolutely is a form of energy work because there is direction of energy, intention, and subtle energetic communication occurring through the nervous system and body. Some certified craniosacral therapists may disagree with that perspective, and I respect that. However, this is my personal philosophy and understanding of the work.
Traditional Reiki is somewhat different in structure and technique. Reiki is not psychic reading, aura reading, fortune telling, or “magic.” Traditional Reiki involves the Reiki practitioner or Reiki Master allowing energy to flow naturally through them without force, manipulation, or attachment to outcome. Reiki practitioners often use sacred symbols and place the hands lightly on or above the body. The universal life-force energy is allowed to flow where it is needed. The practitioner is merely the vessel. There is no forcing an outcome, no manipulation, and no trying to “fix” the client. It is a gentle, compassionate, and non-forceful modality.
Energy Dynamics or broader energy work can involve additional energetic systems beyond traditional Reiki. This can include working with the aura, etheric field, chakras, energetic disturbances, emotional imprints, grounding, elemental energies, energetic attachments, or imbalances within the energetic field. Some energy work is very simple and gentle, while some approaches become much more layered and multidimensional depending on the practitioner’s background and philosophy.
Not every client wants energy work, and I fully respect that. That is one reason I intentionally separate certain services on my website. Consent, comfort, personal beliefs, and boundaries always come first. If someone does not want a certain modality incorporated into their session, that is always respected. In the same way that I respect physical boundaries in bodywork, I also respect energetic and personal boundaries.
I would like to make clear that I am a Reiki Master and energy practitioner. Divine, life source energy flows through myself as I am the vessel or the facilitator. I just cannot "turn it off." If this does not resonate or impacts your core belief system I may not be the right therapist for you.
For clients seeking a more integrative experience involving multiple modalities together, I generally recommend Energy Dynamics sessions.
At the center of my philosophy is the understanding that everything is connected. The body, nervous system, emotions, energy, environment, consciousness, and human experience are not truly separate from one another.
Lomi Lomi philosophy explains this beautifully and effortlessly. In traditional Hawaiian understanding, everything comes from the source and everything remains connected to people, nature, spirit, water, land, breath, animals, trees, and life itself. Disconnection creates imbalance. Reconnection creates harmony. This is what we are seeing today in modern, Western world.
Whether someone approaches this work from a therapeutic, nervous system, energetic, spiritual, or holistic perspective, my belief is that these systems are all communicating with one another constantly. Different modalities may use different language, techniques, traditions, or explanations, but they are often moving toward the same purpose: restoring connection, awareness, balance, regulation, and support for the whole person.
I encourage clients to read through my blogs and educational content to better understand the philosophy and approaches behind my work, as each modality carries its own history and perspective while still remaining connected to the larger whole.
With care and support,
Suzan walker LMT
